Promoting safe transfusion practices across the country

◄ Back to Transfusion News

The Blood Service has developed a free Transfusion Orientation Pack to promote safe transfusion practice and deliver education and training materials to junior medical officers (JMOs).

This follows a successful pilot in 2016 which was based on focus groups conducted specifically with JMOs to find out what resources would be best suited to their needs.

There has been a huge demand for this resource – 6,400 copies have been distributed to hospitals around Australia so far.

The following tools are included in the pack:

  • Transfusion Checklist – an overview of the transfusion process
  • Haemoglobin and Platelet Threshold Tables – guidance for appropriate red cell and platelet transfusion
  • Acute Transfusion Reactions Poster – guidance for the identification and management of acute transfusion reactions, and
  • Lanyard Cards (Acute Transfusion Reactions Card/Blood Prescribing Card/Warfarin Reversal Card) – bedside resources to assist with blood component prescription, acute transfusion reaction management and warfarin reversal.
