The Blood Service has developed a free Transfusion Orientation Pack to promote safe transfusion practice and deliver education and training materials to JMOs.
This follows a successful pilot in 2016 which was based on focus groups conducted specifically with JMOs to find out what resources would be best suited to their needs.
The following tools are included in the pack:
- Transfusion Checklist - an overview of the transfusion process
- Haemoglobin and Platelet Threshold Tables - guidance for the appropriate red cell and platelet transfusion
- Acute Transfusion Reactions Poster - guidance for the identification and management of acute transfusion reactions
- Lanyard Cards (Acute Transfusion Reactions Card/Blood Prescribing Card/Warfarin Reversal Card) - bedside resources to assist with blood component prescription, acute transfusion reaction management and warfarin reversal
There were over 5000 packs distributed nationally in 2018.
To complement the Transfusion Orientation Packs, two PowerPoint presentations have also now been designed to help medical educators deliver safe transfusion lectures during the onsite JMO Orientation Days and/or during the coming year's JMO education program:
