Transfusion Orientation Pack for JMOs

◄ Back to Transfusion News

The Blood Service has developed a free Transfusion Orientation Pack to promote safe transfusion practice and deliver education and training materials to JMOs.

This follows a successful pilot in 2016 which was based on focus groups conducted specifically with JMOs to find out what resources would be best suited to their needs.

The following tools are included in the pack:

  • Transfusion Checklist – an overview of the transfusion process
  • Haemoglobin and Platelet Threshold Tables – guidance for appropriate red cell and platelet transfusion
  • Acute Transfusion Reactions Poster – guidance for the identification and management of acute transfusion reactions, and
  • Lanyard Cards (Acute Transfusion Reactions Card/Blood Prescribing Card/Warfarin Reversal Card) – bedside resources to assist with blood component prescription, acute transfusion reaction management and warfarin reversal

The Transfusion Policy and Education team will be meeting with Education Coordinators around the country in November to determine the number of packs needed for each health organisation. If you are interested in setting up a meeting or organising packs for 2018, please email transfusionlearning@redcrossblood.org.au

The packs will then be sent out to health organisations for distribution to JMOs early 2018.
