The Blood Service Audit Tool has recently been launched to assist health professionals benchmark their clinical transfusion and patient blood management activities.

More than 150 professionals from hospitals and laboratories across the country have now registered to use the free online audit tool.

Dr Ben Saxon, Transfusion Specialist, says international interest along with the number of registered users highlights the degree of potential opportunity for the tool and its application.

“It’s hoped the Audit Tool will be adopted by a wide range of hospitals and laboratories – not just in Australia - and seen as a useful resource to achieve better blood management.”

The Audit Tool can be found at audit.transfusion.com.au – and audits from the BloodSafe, Blood Matters and BloodMove collaboratives are currently being hosted on the tool.

Audits available allow users to audit against bedside checking, policy and practise of obtaining consent, and blood fridge maintenance practises within their health services.

“With interest growing at a steady rate over the last three months, a number of new audits will be added in the near future,” said Ben.

Each audit is based on national standards and/or guidelines, including the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards and the Patient Blood Management Guidelines.

And comparative data is based on the information the user submits when classifying each audit, including site and geographical information.

“The Audit Tool is a clear example of how the Blood Service is always striving to provide new resources, innovate and add value to the blood transfusion community.”
